Day 1 Arrive in Shimla

Pick-up from Chandigarh, Kalka or Shimla and transfer to your hotel in Shimla. After check-in and rest, evening walk on Mall Road, Scandal Point, The Ridge and Christ Church.

Day 2 Shimla to Kalpa via Narkanda

Early start for a long scenic drive of about 8 to 9 hours via Narkanda and Rampur, with tea and meal stops, as the road follows the Sutlej valley into Kinnaur. Reach Kalpa by evening, check in and rest. Evening walk through the village lanes and apple orchards, with views of the Kinner Kailash range when the sky is clear.

Day 3 Kalpa to Kaza via Nako and Tabo

Long day of about 8 to 9 hours through the dry Kinnaur and Spiti landscape, with stops at Nako Lake and Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the region. Reach Kaza by evening, check in and rest. Short walk in Kaza town and an early night to adjust to the altitude.

Day 4 Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Key Monastery and Kibber

Early start for a full day in the high villages: Langza and its Buddha statue, the Hikkim post office and Komic, then Key Monastery, Kibber village and the Chicham bridge on the way back. Visit Hadimba Devi Temple in its cedar forest, Manu Temple in Old Manali, the Vashisht hot springs and temple, the Tibetan monastery and Van Vihar park. Evening free on Mall Road for shopping and street food.

Travel tips for Himachal

  • Carry warm layers even in summer, because evenings are cool, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and a light rain jacket
  • Carry a valid photo ID for every traveller, and some cash, because ATMs can be far apart in the hills and cards are not accepted everywhere
  • Mountain roads wind a lot, so carry motion-sickness tablets and some snacks and water for the long drive days
  • Mobile networks can be patchy, so tell family your plan and download offline maps before you leave
  • Keep one spare day in your plan, because landslides, snow or a damaged road can delay the journey
  • Book onward flights or trains for the evening or the next day after your last night, not the same morning
  • In Kinnaur and Spiti, take the first day slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your driver at once if you feel unwell
