About this package

Spiti Valley Tour Itinerary from Shimla is a 5 nights 6 days plan covering Kalpa and Kaza (Spiti Valley). Your stay includes rooms on twin sharing with breakfast and dinner, a private car for transfers and sightseeing, and a day-wise itinerary that you can change to suit your dates, group and budget. The trip starts in Shimla, so you save the long road journey from the plains. Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert, so the route you can take depends on the season (see the route table below).

Kalpa is a quiet Kinnaur village at about 2,960 m, known for its apple orchards, old temples and views of the Kinner Kailash range, and it is a gentle first step up in altitude. Kaza is the largest town of Spiti and its base, at about 3,800 m, with a small market, cafes and the roads to Key Monastery, Kibber and the high villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komic.

Day-wise itinerary

5 nights 6 days: Kalpa (1N) + Kaza (Spiti Valley) (3N) + Kalpa (1N). Tap a day to open it.

Day 1 Shimla to Kalpa via Narkanda

Pick-up from your hotel, the Shimla bus stand or railway station in the morning. Early start for a long scenic drive of about 8 to 9 hours via Narkanda and Rampur, with tea and meal stops, as the road follows the Sutlej valley into Kinnaur. Reach Kalpa by evening, check in and rest. Evening walk through the village lanes and apple orchards, with views of the Kinner Kailash range when the sky is clear.

Day 2 Kalpa to Kaza via Nako and Tabo

Long day of about 8 to 9 hours through the dry Kinnaur and Spiti landscape, with stops at Nako Lake and Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the region. Reach Kaza by evening, check in and rest. Short walk in Kaza town and an early night to adjust to the altitude.

Day 3 Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham Bridge

Visit Key Monastery (about 4,160 m), one of the largest monasteries in Spiti, then Kibber village (about 4,270 m) and the Chicham suspension bridge over a deep gorge. We keep a gentle pace so you can acclimatise, and you are back in Kaza by evening for tea and the market.

Day 4 Langza, Hikkim and Komic

Drive to Langza (about 4,400 m) for its large Buddha statue and fossil-rich slopes, then Hikkim, whose post office is often called the highest in the world, and Komic, among the highest villages linked by road. Send a postcard from Hikkim, then return to Kaza.

Day 5 Kaza to Kalpa via Tabo and Nako

Check out after breakfast and drive about 8 to 9 hours back via Tabo and Nako, with meal stops. The scenery changes from barren mountains to apple country as you reach Kalpa. Check in and rest. Evening walk through the village lanes and apple orchards, with views of the Kinner Kailash range when the sky is clear.

Day 6 Kalpa to Shimla and departure

Early breakfast and a long drive of about 8 to 9 hours back to Shimla via Rampur and Narkanda, with meal stops. Drop at your Shimla hotel, bus stand or railway station. Going on to Chandigarh or Kalka the same night adds about 4 hours and is possible on request at extra cost, but we suggest booking onward tickets for the next day.

Where you will stay

Stays in Spiti are simpler than in other hill stations, and rooms are limited. Areas are indicative and the exact property is confirmed at booking.

Stay levelWhat to expect
BudgetHomestays and guesthouses with clean, basic rooms; bathrooms and hot water can be simple
Standard (most popular)Better hotels and homestays with attached bathrooms, and a room heater or wood stove when cold
PremiumThe best hotels and resorts available at each stop; still simpler than similar hotels in Shimla or Manali

Usual areas: Kalpa: Kalpa and Reckong Peo side, rooms with Kinner Kailash views where available; Kaza (Spiti Valley): Kaza town, near the main market.

Best time to travel

  • Kalpa: Kalpa is pleasant from March to June and from September to November. Winters are cold, with heavy snow possible.
  • Kaza (Spiti Valley): Kaza is best from June to October, when both the Manali and Shimla roads are usually open. In winter it can be reached only from the Shimla side through Kinnaur, depending on snow, and nights are well below freezing.
SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
SummerJune to SeptemberMain season: both routes usually open, Chandratal reachable and skies clear. The busiest months, so book early.
AutumnOctober to early NovemberClear and colder, with golden valleys. The Kunzum road can close after the first snow.
WinterDecember to MarchShimla and Kinnaur route only. Very cold, with snow, limited stays and a quiet landscape. Sightings of snow leopard are possible around Kibber and Langza but never guaranteed.
SpringApril to MayKinnaur route open and the Manali side usually not yet. Cold, with patches of snow, and quieter.

Spiti itself is a dry rain-shadow valley, but the approach roads, especially in Kinnaur and on the Manali side, can see landslides in July and August.

Travel tips for Spiti Valley

  • Carry warm layers even in summer, because nights at Kaza and Chandratal are close to freezing, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm for the strong sun
  • Carry a valid photo ID for every traveller, and enough cash, because ATMs in Kaza may be out of order and cards are not accepted everywhere
  • Mobile networks are patchy in Kinnaur and Spiti, so tell family your plan and download offline maps before you leave
  • Mountain roads wind a lot, so carry motion-sickness tablets and some snacks and water for the long drive days
  • Keep one spare day in your plan, because landslides, snow or a damaged road can delay the journey
  • Foreign nationals should check the current permit rules for Kinnaur and Spiti before travelling
  • Packing light helps, because rooms are small and the drive is long
